Enjoy and Entertain

Our snares have tones and depths of sound that make playing and listening more enjoyable than ever

Stave Construction

All of our drums are made using stave method construction. Like a cooper makes barrels, a drum is made of angled vertical sticks of lumber rather than plywood drums which are wrapped layers of thin wood. A theory we have kicking around to explain the difference of sound is glue does not resonate, staves use only glue at the joints, plywood uses it on the whole surface of each layer.

Grain in a stave drum travels vertically, projecting tone even further.

Shells and Lumber

Water recovered

During the logging boom in the mid to late 1800s here in Canada, loggers would use river and lake systems to float fallen trees to the mill to be cut and sold. Many of the logs sunk to the bottom of these waters and remained there until now. Some of these trees are hundreds of years old, different varieties, and with beautiful figure (partly the cause of the original sinking due to extra weight of the figure)

The first snare Marcello Sr. built was of water recovered flamed birch and that’s how the idea of Leviathan drums came to be. A monstrous sound coming from the mythic creature of the deep.

Domestic & Exotic

Land walker, our domestic and exotic lumber line. If the lumber is from dry land it is a Land walker.

Many different species and varieties avaliable.

Marquetry shells

These shells have a pattern inlaid into the shell. They can be of a variety of woods. Domestic, exotic, water recovered.

ABOUT US

About

Leviathan Drum co. crafted in Coles Island, New Brunswick, Canada in a small custom shop. Marcello Ciurleo Sr. brings 40 years of woodworking experience and nearly as long is his drumming experience. He takes as much care and consideration when building an 18th-century piece of fine furniture to playing drum parts dynamically with the feel and technical ability so much so that drum building was an organic direction to take.
